MARGARET WATIRI

We got the pleasure to do an interview with Margaret Watiri, who is a participant in our Dig Deep Program. We explored why she wanted to take part in the Dig Deep Program, what is her new business and how she has found building her business.

Can you introduce yourself - your name and what you do?

My name is Margaret. I’m a textile designer.

Why did you want to take part in the Dig Deep Programme?

I wanted to take part in dig deep to have a holistic approach to building a creative business. I’ve started other businesses in the past but never felt like I had true ownership.

What is the new business that you have been developing?

I have been developing an African inspired textiles brand mainly focusing on bedwear.

What has been your biggest hurdle since you started your business?

My biggest hurdle has been implementing all my ideas and not just staying an ideas person.

How do you see your business developing in the future?

I hope to build a sustainable business that eventually helps other creatives market their homeware products as well.

What misconceptions did you have about starting your own business?

I don't think I had any misconceptions about starting your own business. However, I think many people think they can’t do it. I’d like to say there is a business model out there for everyone.

What have you learnt about yourself since starting the programme?

I’ve learned that I’m more skilled at unknown things than I give myself credit for.

What/who influences/motivates you?

My family and friends are my biggest motivators. Many of them have started their own businesses. As well as all the other members of Dig Deep. It's great being surrounded by so many creatives.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far since starting your business?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been refining my business ideas until I’ve created a business I’m excited to grow with.

What have you learnt about your business in the last 3 months?

It’s cliche but, I’ve learned it's a journey, not a race.

What things are you going to implement in your business in 2021?

This year, I would like to implement some bedtime clothing and loungewear by the end of the year.

What advice would you give your younger self?

One thing I'd tell my younger self to just go for my dreams because not trying will hurt more than failing.
