Can you introduce yourself - your name and what you do?

Hello! My name is Rachel Lawell, I am a Visual Artist specializing in painting.

Why did you want to take part in the Dig Deep Programme?

I wanted to take part in the Dig Deep Programme because I liked the idea of working with other like-minded creative women, that could help advise and aid the development of my business idea in a non-judgemental space, with positive energy.

What is the new business that you have been developing?

My business idea is not necessarily new; it’s been a gradual journey from graduating from university and at this stage, I’m ready to take it further and commit to it with a business approach rather than for just the love of it. My business is creating original artworks and creating client commissions.

What has been your biggest hurdle since you started your business?

My biggest hurdle has been finding the time to continually work on developing my business. As a single parent and working another part time job with various other commitments, it’s difficult to find the time to fit it all in.

How do you see your business developing in the future?

I would love to become self-sufficient and stable relying only on the sales of my works, being comfortable and continuing to do what I love. Committing all my time to my art.

What misconceptions did you have about starting your own business?

The most common misconception I’ve heard about developing my business is that a market would be difficult to find for selling original artworks, however, I’m finding when you target the right people, the clients will find you and the more artworks you produce and advertise, the more clients approach you.

What have you learnt about yourself since starting the programme?

I have learnt that I am very motivated to make this business work for myself and that I will create a sustainable business and be completely self-sufficient.

 What/who influences/motivates you?

All other creative people motivate me! Too many people to mention. Anyone that pushes themselves to create inventive work and who drives themselves to gain opportunities and develop as a creative or artist. I find that very inspiring.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far since starting your business?

My biggest accomplishment has been gaining more exposure on social media, collecting more clients and receiving positive feedback on my work.

What have you learnt about your business in the last 3 months?

I have learnt that there is a market there for selling original artworks. When you put yourself out there, promote yourself and approach the right people, they’re your market.

What things are you going to implement in your business in 2021?

In 2021 I would like to develop my social media presence further and hopefully, collaborate with other creative people.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would tell myself to work harder and take my art more seriously – as it will go somewhere!

Where can people find you online?
